A U.S. citizen has taken to social media to rant about the country's healthcare system after being charged over $9,000 for a hospital visit involving his wife.

She underwent a CT scan, which thankfully revealed nothing serious.

However, he expressed shock after receiving a bill totaling $9,117.42 for the scan and medications, describing the situation as evidence that the U.S. healthcare system is broken.

He wrote:

"A few weeks ago my wife went to the hospital for stomach pain. They did a CT Scan of her abdomen and thankfully didn't find anything serious."

"Today we got the bill in the mail: $9,117.42. Healthcare is broken."

The post sparked reactions from several users who shared similar frustrations and experiences with the healthcare system in the U.S.

See some reactions below:

@RealPatrickWebb: "Insanity. This is why people die-because they can't afford to get checked out unless something is seriously wrong. Everyone should be able to monitor their health without it costing an arm and a leg."

@BeijingDai: "In China, CT costs about 80-150 dollar, but 9000+ in US. This is what I call 'painful GDP', which does not contribute much to people's happiness, but contributes a lot to statistical GDP, and the United States is far ahead in this regard. Another example is lawyer."

@RealReeceR: "My brother got hit head on by a drunk driver with no drivers license or insurance and was in ICU for 3 weeks as a result. 4 years later the hospital put a lien on his home for $856,000. Roughly half of that was from imaging fees alone."

@_ChristIsLord: "I took my son in for his annual physical wellness check up. The appointment lasted about 15 minutes. No X-rays. No tests. 1 flu shot and that was it. They billed $1,000. My insurance covered most of it, but to me this is an obvious form of legalized theft."

@DennisP220: "I understand but those machines are very expensive as are the training and overhead/operating costs. Tech advances in medicine are not cheap. Countries like Canada and the UK are notorious for waiting times for a procedure like MRI or CT of months."

@HopeSRN: "CT scans are Very expensive!! The equipment use and the expert staff to complete the scan professionally!"

@Dstat_THR: "Went to the clinic for my son who had a fever and his ear hurt. I knew it was an ear infection, and needed a Dr to write a script for antibiotics. We were there 5 min. Dr walked in, looked in ear said "Yup, ear infection" sent the script and we left. We are insured. $870 bill."
