Unai Emery's Aston Villa are interested in acquiring the services of Sporting CP's attacking mainstay Pedro Goncalves.
According to A Bola via SportWitness, Aston Villa have been keeping a close eye on Pedro Goncalves ahead of a potential move this summer. Unai Emery's team remain keen on his signature despite his long injury layoff and they could knock on the doors of Sporting CP as soon as the transfer window opens.
Goncalves has only gone from strength to strength since joining the Portuguese giants in the summer of 2020. While he has been a key figure in their team in recent years, the 2024/25 campaign hasn't really gone according to plan for the 26-year-old.
He did start the season in fine fashion but picked up a muscle injury in November which sidelined him for 150 days. While he is back fit and has featured in their last three games, he is slowly working to get back to his best.
Despite the injury lay-off, there is still a lot of interest in the Portuguese winger who has 11 goal contributions this season. Bayer Leverkusen and Aston Villa are two clubs that have been linked with him.
Villa to step up their interest in Goncalves
While Leverkusen have already failed with an attempt to sign him, Villa are looking to take the charge in the race for his signature. The Premier League outfit wants to add more quality to their ranks as they look to build on all the progress they have made under Emery.
They were monitoring the 26-year-old on his way back from injury and they remain keen on having him in their ranks. He is not only comfortable on the left flank, but can also slot in on the right or even in midfield when needed.
He has been a consistent performer for Sporting and could do a great job for Emery's team. While Villa are pushing to sign him, they won't find it easy as the Portuguese club has no intentions of sanctioning his departure. They are already in talks to extend his contract beyond 2027.
However, those talks are on hold as the player is focused on doing his best and helping the club win the league. As a result, Villa might have a window to try and convince him to make the move. But even that won't be straightforward as Goncalves is happy at Sporting.
