End of transformative papacy - CAN hails Pope Francis' Legacy of mercy, justice

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Pope Francis, describing him as a global beacon of compassion, justice, and faith whose influence extended powerfully to Nigeria and across the African continent.

In a statement issued on Monday, April 21, 2025, CAN National President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, offered heartfelt condolences to the Catholic Church and the global Christian community, noting that Pope Francis' death at the age of 88 marks the end of a transformative papacy.

"Pope Francis was a towering figure of faith whose papacy radiated mercy, justice, and a profound love for humanity," Okoh stated. "His legacy left an indelible mark on Nigeria, where he strengthened the Church by appointing Nigerian bishops and cardinals, affirming the vibrant faith of our people."

While Pope Francis never visited Nigeria during his lifetime, Archbishop Okoh noted that his pastoral journeys across Africa and his embrace of interfaith dialogue brought messages of solidarity that were strongly felt in Nigeria's multi-religious landscape.

"His unwavering commitment to interfaith dialogue brought hope for peace in our diverse nation, nurturing unity in the face of many challenges," Okoh said.

Pope Francis' vocal stance on global issues such as poverty, inequality, corruption, and climate change resonated deeply with Nigerians. CAN highlighted his landmark encyclicals, Laudato Si' and Amoris Laetitia, which advanced teachings on environmental responsibility and the sanctity of family life.

"As we bid farewell to this devoted servant of God, we pray for the peaceful repose of his soul and for the Catholic Church in this time of transition," Archbishop Okoh added. "May the legacy of Pope Francis, rooted in compassion, justice, and humility, continue to inspire us as we strive towards a more united and righteous Nigeria."

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, became the 266th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church in 2013 and was widely regarded for his humility, reformist views, and efforts to bridge religious and social divides around the world.
