Ruben Amorim has candidly acknowledged that his Manchester United squad could go down as the worst in the club's Premier League history. Following a string of 14 defeats, United have plummeted to 14th place and are now unable to surpass their lowest points record of 58 after another crushing defeat at Newcastle.

The Red Devils' gaffer made the bold move to bench top goalkeeper Andre Onana for the Europa League second leg against Lyon, but his stand-in Altay Bayindir endured a torrid time. Reflecting on the dismal season, Amorim conceded during his post match press conference: "It is a reflection of our season, we need to accept that and to move forward and try to do things so much better in the future so we don't have this kind of season."

Amorim has kept cards close to his chest regarding the potential selection of Onana for the upcoming Thursday clash, but he has confirmed the likely absence of Joshua Zirkzee, who suffered a hamstring injury. Amidst this backdrop, Newcastle's assistant, Jason Tindall, stepped up due to boss Eddie Howe being sidelined by illness since his Friday hospital admittance.

The team's triumph propelled Newcastle to a fourth-place standing, sparking Champions League dreams. Tindall shared: "I said to the players before the game: 'Go out and deliver a performance the manager would be proud of.' They did that. I got a text message from him before I came into the press conference and the performance would have put a smile on his face."
