Nigeria's Super Eagles will be aiming to continue their resurgence under Eric Chelle as they take on Zimbabwe in a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium. After securing a much-needed 2-0 win against Rwanda last Friday, the Super Eagles are aiming for back-to-back victories to strengthen their qualification hopes.
Chelle is expected to stick with the 4-4-2 diamond formation that worked effectively in Kigali, though a few personnel changes could be on the cards.
Goalkeeper and Defense
Stanley Nwabali is set to retain his place in goal following an assured performance against Rwanda. In central defense, William Troost-Ekong and Calvin Bassey will likely continue their partnership, providing stability at the back. However, a change at full-back could be necessary. Bright Osayi-Samuel is a doubt after picking up a knock, meaning Ola Aina could shift to his preferred right-back role while Bruno Onyemaechi fills in on the left.
Midfield
The midfield battle will be crucial, and Chelle may opt for some adjustments. Wilfred Ndidi is expected to anchor the midfield, shielding the defense and dictating play. Raphael Onyedika could replace Samuel Chukwueze, who struggled in an unfamiliar role against Rwanda. Alex Iwobi is likely to retain his spot, while Ademola Lookman will play in a more advanced position, linking up with the forwards.
Attack
Victor Osimhen, fresh off his brace against Rwanda, will once again lead the line as Nigeria's main attacking threat. The Napoli striker now has 25 international goals and will be looking to add to his tally. Moses Simon is expected to partner him up front, offering pace and creativity.
Expected Nigeria Starting XI
Stanley Nwabali; Ola Aina, William Troost-Ekong, Calvin Bassey, Bruno Onyemaechi; Wilfred Ndidi, Raphael Onyedika, Alex Iwobi, Ademola Lookman; Moses Simon, Victor Osimhen.
