Former senator and social commentator, Shehu Sani, has weighed in on the ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State, emphasizing the need for peace and stability over expectations of "magic, miracles, or mayhem" from the National Assembly.
Following the House of Representatives' endorsement of President Bola Tinubu's declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, Sani took to social media to share his perspective on the matter.
According to him, regardless of the outcome, the primary focus should be on restoring order and democracy in the state.
"For those who were expecting magic, miracles, or mayhem from the National Assembly, the result is out. Whatever is the outcome, the ultimate goal of all Nigerians should be the restoration of peace and democratic order in Rivers," he posted on X.
He further urged political actors in Rivers State to set aside their differences and work toward the collective good of the people, rather than allowing political disputes to escalate further.
"The gladiators in Rivers must sit down and put the interest of the people of Rivers first and foremost. Rivers is an example of a rich man who has no peace in his home," he stated.
His comments reflect growing concerns that the crisis in Rivers State, which has seen deep divisions between Governor Sim Fubara and his political rivals, could lead to prolonged instability.
Sani's call for peace aligns with broader calls from civil society and political observers who fear that the emergency rule, if not carefully managed, could further erode democratic institutions in the state.
With tensions still running high, many are looking to the federal government and state actors to take steps toward dialogue and reconciliation.
