The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) Governing Council, led by Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, paid an official visit to the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, at his residence in Life Camp, Abuja, on Monday, March 17, 2025. The visit was an opportunity to acknowledge Wike's continuous contributions to national development and his alma mater, as well as to discuss future collaborations between the university and the FCT Ministry.
During the visit, Senator Ohuabunwa congratulated Wike on his appointment as FCT Minister, describing it as a well-earned recognition of his leadership skills and commitment to governance. The Pro-Chancellor noted that Wike had consistently demonstrated competence in public administration, citing his tenure as Governor of Rivers State as a period of remarkable infrastructural growth and policy reforms.
"As an alumnus of the University of Port Harcourt, you have consistently demonstrated your capacity and have represented our institution with great distinction in all your endeavors. We are immensely proud of you," Ohuabunwa stated. He emphasized that Wike's achievements have not only brought pride to UNIPORT but have also set a standard of excellence for graduates of the university.
Ohuabunwa also highlighted Wike's direct contributions to the university, particularly in enhancing its academic and physical infrastructure. He commended the Minister for playing a crucial role in establishing the Faculty of Law and overseeing the construction of its building. He also noted that Wike was instrumental in the development of the university's world-class Convocation Arena, a project that has greatly improved the institution's capacity to host significant academic events.
"These legacy projects stand as a testament to your dedication and commitment to the University of Port Harcourt," Ohuabunwa added. "Your efforts have positioned UNIPORT as a center of academic excellence, and we recognize your unwavering support in strengthening our institution."
Responding to the commendations, Wike expressed his appreciation for the recognition but also used the moment to reflect on certain issues within the university. He noted that while he remained committed to the growth of UNIPORT, he was not pleased with the way some aspects of the institution were being handled, particularly regarding political influences.
"But I will say something that I don't like," Wike remarked. "The Vice-Chancellor is here; he was playing politics, yes. I know what happened. Ordinarily, I would not have supported because of the political position he took. You are a university; you are supposed to be the center of excellence, not of ethnic politics. No, I wasn't happy."
Despite his reservations, Wike reiterated his belief in destiny and divine guidance, asserting that his success could not be hindered by political opposition. "If God says this is what will be, nobody can stop it. My good politically is by God. Men have done everything to bring me down. It has never worked and it will not work," he stated confidently.
The Minister also spoke about the importance of truth and integrity in leadership, advising that people must recognize and uphold the truth in all circumstances. "You see, there are people who have special grace; you have to be careful. This thing, when people see the reality, the truth, this is the truth," he concluded.
