Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, has called for an impartial investigation into the sexual harassment allegations made by Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
Akpoti-Uduaghan recently accused Akpabio of making inappropriate advances toward her during a visit to his home in Akwa Ibom. The accusation followed a tense Senate exchange regarding Akpoti-Uduaghan's seating arrangement, which was altered without explanation.
Initially, Kingibe had downplayed the importance of the seating controversy, noting that other senators were also affected by similar changes. However, in light of the sexual harassment claims, she has since revised her stance and is now advocating for a full investigation into the matter.
Kingibe clarified that her earlier remarks were not intended to undermine Akpoti-Uduaghan's allegations, but rather to explain that she was unaware of any such events at the time.
Kingibe has reaffirmed her commitment to combating harassment and violence against women in Nigeria. She stressed that the issue of harassment and assault is prevalent in both homes and workplaces across the country and should be addressed by everyone, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or religion.
As a sitting senator, she emphasized that she will continue to stand against violence and injustice and will always work to ensure that the truth prevails.
Kingibe further highlighted the importance of a thorough investigation if a formal complaint is filed with the Senate. She remains firm in her dedication to protecting the rights and dignity of women and fighting for justice in cases of harassment.
