Russia Reacts to 30-Day Ceasefire Proposal, argues that Such Proposal Would Serve Ukraine's Interest

According to report, Russia has pushed back against a ceasefire plan put forward by the United States, arguing that the proposal would serve only to give Ukrainian forces a break rather than contribute to a lasting resolution. The suggested 30-day pause, presented by U.S. officials, comes amid Moscow's steady military progress and Washington's ongoing diplomatic efforts to broker an agreement.

Concerns are mounting in the West that Kyiv could be at risk of losing critical ground in the ongoing war, now in its third year. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has made moves toward a potential peace deal, dispatching key officials to engage with Moscow. Among them, Steve Witkoff, a special envoy focusing on Middle Eastern affairs, arrived in the Russian capital for discussions with President Vladimir Putin.

The proposal itself was reportedly outlined by U.S. National Security Adviser Mike Waltz in a discussion with Russian officials. According to the White House, President Trump has expressed hope that the Kremlin will consider the offer. Ukraine, for its part, has signaled that it would be open to such a truce.

Yuri Ushakov, a veteran diplomat and close adviser to Putin on international affairs, commented on the matter in a televised statement. He indicated that he had personally communicated with Waltz, making Russia's stance clear: the Kremlin sees the ceasefire as little more than a brief reprieve for Ukrainian forces, without any real prospects for long-term peace.

According to Ushakov, Russia's objective remains a durable agreement that addresses the country's security concerns and interests. He dismissed temporary measures as insufficient, suggesting they could be used as a smokescreen rather than a genuine step toward ending the conflict.

Further details were expected later, as Putin was set to make a public statement clarifying Moscow's official position.
