Barcelona's Lamine Yamal addressed the racism he faced at Santiago Bernabeu.
Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal recently addressed the racist insults he received at the Santiago Bernabeu earlier in the season.
Yamal subjected to racism
The 17-year-old is already one of the best footballers in the world. During a dominant El Clasico performance earlier in the season, in which he led his team to a 4-0 victory, he and his teammate Alejandro Balde were subjected to racial abuse.
Yamal played down the incident after it occurred, saying it did not bother him and that earned him criticism, as some fans believed that he should have attacked the issue head-on like Vinicius does. In a recent interview with Dazn, the youngster explained how he could be so cavalier after suffering something so despicable.
What he said
During the interview, Yamal spoke to what he believes to be the root cause of these racist incidents, alluding to a lack of proper training. Hence, he stated that was why his approach was to ignore them.
"I think that if we had lost, maybe I would have thought: 'Why do they tell me this or that?' But in the end, it's about enjoying life," Yamal said, per MD.
"When someone insults you, maybe they were raised that way or didn't receive the right values. That's why I think you shouldn't pay attention to it and move on."
He went on to laud his mother for raising him right, revealing that she shielded him from the ills of the world in his younger years.
"I always tell my mother that I am very grateful to her because, despite how difficult things were for her, she made sure that I did not see anything wrong. So maybe I didn't have the best childhood in the world, but she made it seem like I did, so I could only see the good and enjoy it."
Meanwhile, Yamal was at his brilliant best in the Champions League last night. He scored and assisted in Barcelona's 3-1 victory against Benfica at Montjuic to send the Blaugrana flying into the last eight.
