A violent confrontation in Elele town, Rivers State, has left multiple people injured, with at least eight individuals reportedly suffering gunshot wounds. The incident occurred in Ikwerre Local Government Area, specifically at the Elele Roundabout along the Port Harcourt-Owerri Road, leading to heightened tensions in the community.
Eyewitness accounts allege that the leader of the Elele Security Planning and Advisory Committee (ESPAC), a local vigilante group, was responsible for the attack. It is claimed that he opened fire on supporters of Governor Sim Fubara while making threats against their lives. Some sources suggest that this individual, who is believed to be associated with a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had previously vowed to eliminate the governor's supporters in the area.
Speaking to Newsmen, an anonymous witness described the attack as deliberate. "The ESPAC commander, who is also leading a PDP faction in Elele, fired shots at Governor Fubara's supporters. Many of them are now in the hospital with gunshot injuries. He has been issuing threats for a long time, and now he has started carrying them out. We call on security agencies to take action before the situation escalates further," the witness said.
Although some reports indicate eight people were wounded, the Rivers State Police Command has confirmed four casualties. Authorities have responded by arresting a suspect and seizing a firearm. Police spokesperson SP Grace Iringe-Koko stated that officers quickly mobilized to the scene after receiving reports of an unlawful gathering.
