It was another miserable afternoon for Ruben Amorim.
Defending FA Cup champions Manchester United were eliminated from the competition in a dramatic penalty shootout as Bernd Leno's heroics secured Fulham's passage to the quarter-finals at Old Trafford.
The game ended 1-1 after 120 minutes, with Calvin Bassey giving Fulham a first-half lead before Bruno Fernandes equalised for United in the second half.
The match saw moments of high drama, with both goalkeepers making crucial saves, but Marco Silva's side held their nerve in the penalty shootout to progress.
United started brightly, with Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen testing Leno early on, while Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund had half chances. However, Fulham grew into the game, and Sasa Lukic squandered a golden opportunity in the 37th minute when he headed Alex Iwobi's cross wide from close range.
Just as the half seemed to be winding down, Fulham found their breakthrough. Rodrigo Muniz met Andreas Pereira's corner with a glancing header that found its way to Bassey at the far post. The Nigerian international made no mistake, smashing the ball past Andre Onana to send Fulham into the break with a 1-0 lead.
United pushed for an equaliser after the break, with Alejandro Garnacho, introduced as a substitute, adding energy to their attack.
The hosts struggled to break down a well-organised Fulham defense until the 71st minute when Diogo Dalot delivered a pinpoint low cross into the box. Fernandes arrived at the perfect moment, guiding the ball into the net with a first-time finish to bring United level.
The goal ignited Old Trafford, and United pressed forward in search of a winner. Garnacho came close on multiple occasions, and teenage substitute Chido Obi-Martin nearly snatched victory in stoppage time, only for Leno to make a crucial save. At the other end, Onana denied Fulham substitute Emile Smith Rowe with a fingertip stop to force extra time.
Both teams had chances in extra time, with Ryan Sessegnon going closest for Fulham when his powerful strike was parried away by Onana.
Casemiro also fired wide from distance as United attempted to avoid penalties. However, neither side could find a decisive goal, and the match headed to a dramatic shootout in front of the Stretford End.
The penalty shootout started with Fernandes calmly sending Leno the wrong way to give United the lead. Raul Jimenez responded in kind for Fulham, before Dalot and Sander Berge converted their respective spot-kicks to make it 2-2.
Casemiro restored United's advantage, only for Willian to level the scores again. Viktor Lindelof then saw his effort saved by Leno, giving Fulham the opportunity to seize control. Antonee Robinson kept his composure to roll the ball down the middle, putting Fulham 4-3 ahead.
With United's FA Cup hopes on the line, Zirkzee stepped up but saw his penalty saved by Leno, sparking wild celebrations among the Fulham players and fans.
