Ruben Amorim slammed for 'garbage decision' to haul Garnacho off as Man Utd star heads straight down tunnel

MANCHESTER UNITED boss felt the wrath of the Old Trafford faithful after a controversial sub on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils went down to ten men against Ipswich when Patrick Dorgu was given a straight red card.

Dorgu was given his marching orders just minutes before the break with United leading 2-1.

The 20-year-old lunged in on Omari Hutchinson, with the tackle deemed worthy of a straight red after an intervention from VAR.

Amorim wasted no time in shuffling his pack to cope with the loss of his full-back.

But fans were not impressed to see him sacrifice outlet Alejandro Garnacho to bring on the more defensive-minded Noussair Mazraoui.

One raged on X: "Garbage decision to take Garnacho off! Terrible terrible terrible."

With no Dorgu, Garnacho would have been the only player who can carry the ball out wide, in transition and progress it on the wide channels.

Another said: "Garnacho hooked very surprising, he's an outlet and will run all day."

While a third wrote: "Why are you taking Garnacho off when you've got f***ing Hojlund up front, if the fella fell off a boat he'd miss the water."

And a fourth added: "I will never fully blame the manager but pulling off Garnacho at 2-1 was a literal f***ing war crime."

While a fifth complained: "Amorim is a proper coward for taking off Garnacho instead of Hojlund."

The decision didn't appear to go down too well with Garnacho either.

He was spotted walking straight down the tunnel to the dressing room, with Ipswich levelling the games moments later.

Jalen Philogene netted his second of the match as the Tractor Boys sensed a big second half.

But Amorim's decision ultimately paid off as Harry Maguire headed United into the lead after the break.

Garnacho was linked with a move to Napoli during the January transfer window.

The switch didn't materialise but the Argentine's future could yet lay away from the North West.

Amorim has admitted any squad rebuild at Old Trafford will have to see them cash in on their prize assets.

The United boss declared earlier this month: "I have to understand these problems [the club has] but that is not new.

"You know the rules of financial fair play, we have a problem and right now my focus is on other things - like playing Tottenham on Sunday.

"But here it is simple. To do something we need to sell players. Right now the window is closed. My focus is on the next game."
