Israel accuses Egypt of Violating the 1979 peace treaty

According to the Anadolu agency, Israel has accused Egypt of "violations" of the 1979 peace treaty, though it downplayed their significance, according to a report by Israeli public broadcaster KAN.

Citing a high level Israeli official, KAN described the alleged breaches as "non-serious" and stated that Israel does not see any intent from Egypt to undermine the historic agreement.

"We do not see any intention from the Egyptian side to undermine the peace agreement," the official was quoted as saying. "Nonetheless, these violations cannot be considered significant."

Despite the reassurances, Israel has reportedly asked Egypt to fully adhere to the treaty's terms. However, no specific details were provided on the nature of the alleged violations.

Egypt was the first Arab nation to sign a peace treaty with Israel in 1979, formally ending their military conflicts. Key provisions of the treaty included the normalization of diplomatic relations, Israel's complete withdrawal from the Sinai Peninsula, and the establishment of a demilitarized zone along the border.

Israeli social media users have circulated videos purportedly showing Egyptian tanks in the Sinai Peninsula, but their authenticity has not been verified. There has been no immediate comment from Egyptian authorities regarding these claims.

The allegations come amid heightened regional tensions, particularly over Israel's ongoing military campaign in the Gaza Strip. The conflict, which has resulted in nearly 48,300 Palestinian casualties, mostly women and children, was paused under a ceasefire and prisoner exchange deal that took effect on Jan. 19.

Meanwhile, Egypt's Defense Minister Abdel Majeed Saqr recently urged the Egyptian military to maintain "the highest levels of combat readiness," according to a Feb. 11 statement from the Egyptian army.

The situation remains fluid, with both nations maintaining diplomatic ties despite periodic security disagreements.
