The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, has issued a stern warning to Governor Siminalayi Fubara regarding the management of state finances.
This assertion according to report from Newsmen, was made during a recent solidarity visit by the National Assembly Caucus of Rivers State, where he openly criticized the governor for what he termed financial recklessness and a disregard for the law.
Amaewhule highlighted that the laws of Rivers State require a proper screening and confirmation process for nominees to the Rivers State Local Government Service Commission, a process the governor has yet to initiate.
He emphasized the importance of accountability, stating that those in charge must be held responsible for their handling of taxpayers' money.
The Speaker also raised alarm over substantial funds belonging to Rivers State that are currently unaccounted for, insisting that there will be consequences for such oversight. He reassured the public that the Assembly is vigilant and fully aware of the financial situation.
This warning from Amaewhule arrives amidst the backdrop of a controversial Supreme Court ruling from February 10, which has sparked ongoing debates and power struggles within the state's political landscape.
His words,
"The governor should know that we are not sleeping. Hundreds of billions of funds belonging to Rivers State that are missing today, not accounted for, will have a day of reckoning. They should not think that we are asleep; we are not asleep."
