A prominent human rights lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has strongly condemned the arrest and detention of popular Anambra-based native doctor, Chief Chidozie Nwangwu, also known as Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki. Ejiofor described the act as a blatant violation of his constitutional rights and an abuse of power by the Anambra State Government.
Arrest Under Controversial Circumstances
Governor Chukwuma Soludo's administration recently intensified a crackdown on native doctors, citing security concerns and their alleged links to criminal activities. However, Ejiofor insists that Akwa Okuko's arrest is politically motivated and sets a dangerous precedent that threatens religious and expressive freedoms in Anambra State.
In a viral video, Akwa Okuko was seen being taken to the office of Anambra State Deputy Governor, Gilbert Onyekachukwu Ibezim, where he was interrogated before being forcibly placed in a police van and whisked away. During the questioning, he reportedly stated that he had stopped preparing charms and rituals-locally known as "Okeite"-since the government declared war against native doctors.
Ejiofor, in a statement released on Sunday, revealed that Akwa Okuko was lured into the meeting under false pretenses and was unjustly detained. He criticized the government's actions, arguing that detaining someone for their metaphysical beliefs violates Sections 38, 39, and 40 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria, which guarantee freedom of thought, conscience, religion, and expression.
Unlawful Detention and Political Motives
Ejiofor's statement reads in part:
"It is deeply concerning that Chief Chidozie Nwangwu, popularly known as Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki, has been unlawfully arrested by the Anambra State Government. This egregious act not only tramples on his fundamental rights but also raises serious questions about the abuse of state power for political or personal vendettas."
He further alleged that Akwa Okuko has been a target due to his influence and the state's broader agenda to silence certain voices ahead of the 2025 Anambra gubernatorial election.
"I have been reliably informed that Akwa Okuko has consistently discouraged individuals without legitimate means of livelihood from seeking his services. He has publicly declared that only those engaged in genuine trade or business should consult him. If his arrest is indeed linked to a viral video where he allegedly mentioned 'Okeite,' then this is nothing but a gross abuse of power."
Ejiofor also raised concerns about the Agunechemba Security Outfit, recently established by the state government, warning that it could be weaponized for political purposes.
"Initially, I supported the Agunechemba Security Outfit, believing it was necessary to combat criminal activities. However, with the 2025 elections approaching, it appears to be shifting into a tool for suppressing opposition. Any attempt to use it for political intimidation will be resisted by well-meaning Anambrarians."
Call for Immediate Release
Ejiofor did not mince words in his demand for Akwa Okuko's release, stating that the detention is unconstitutional and could set a worrying precedent for religious persecution.
"Given these troubling developments, I call on the Anambra State Government to immediately and unconditionally release Chief Chidozie Nwangwu. His detention is not only illegal but also undermines the fundamental freedoms that every Nigerian is entitled to."
The case has sparked widespread debate, with many Anambra residents questioning the government's selective crackdown on native doctors while allowing other spiritual and religious practices to flourish. As tensions rise, all eyes are on Governor Soludo's administration to see whether it will heed the calls for justice or escalate its clampdown on traditional spiritual figures.
