Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has appealed to the Ogun State government for the release of his detained associates. Their arrest followed an altercation with officials from the Ogun State Planning and Development Permit Authority (OGPDPA) during an enforcement operation.
According to reports from The Cable, the confrontation occurred when OGPDPA officials attempted to seal Portable's Odogwu Bar and Restaurant, citing lack of proper building approvals and insufficient airspace. Portable claimed that during the raid, over 20 people including his apprentices, artists, and customers were arrested. He also alleged that officials seized vehicles, gadgets, and personal belongings.
However, Olatunji Odunlami, the Commissioner for Physical Planning, dismissed Portable's claims, calling them inaccurate and misleading. Authorities arraigned nine individuals on multiple charges, including armed violence, obstruction, assault, and intent to cause harm. They were granted bail set at N5 million each, with sureties required to be licensed bond agents recognized by the state government. The court has scheduled the next hearing for March 17.
In a heartfelt Instagram video, Portable pleaded for the release of his associates, insisting they were innocent apprentices learning trades under his mentorship. He denied the allegations against them and challenged officials to provide video evidence proving their claims.
Appearing to be in hiding, the singer alleged that he was being unfairly targeted and accused unnamed individuals of orchestrating a set-up against him. He also expressed severe emotional distress, stating that the ordeal had pushed him to the brink of despair.
"I come from a humble background. I have no issues with anyone until they set me up. People make money by creating problems, but I did not fight anyone," he said, switching between Pidgin English and Yoruba.
Portable expressed frustration over the closure of his bar, emphasizing that it was not just a business but a means of empowering young people. He revealed that the land where his establishment stands holds deep personal significance, as it was the site where he relocated his late mother's remains after she passed away when he was 13 years old.
"Let them show proof that I attacked those officials. These boys cannot hurt anyone; they are just trying to learn a trade. I am supporting them. Did they find anything illegal with me?" he questioned.
Overcome with emotions, Portable begged for mercy, stating that the situation had left him deeply troubled.
"I am pleading in God's name, please release these boys. My thoughts are troubled. I don't want to harm myself. I have done nothing wrong. No one can take my life," he declared.
