It surprised me - Man United legend questions Rashford decision to join Aston Villa

Marcus Rashford's loan move to Aston Villa is seen as a questionable decision by one Manchester United legend.

Manchester United legend Roy Keane has criticised Marcus Rashford's decision to join Aston Villa, as he expected the 27-year-old to move overseas and try his talents in a new league.

After it became clear the Carrington graduate had to leave his boyhood club in January due to his fallout with head coach Ruben Amorim, multiple sides entered the race for his signature.

He was linked with moves to giants from LALIGA and Serie A, Barcelona and AC Milan, but eventually remained in the Premier League, signing for Unai Emery's overachieving Aston Villa.

What Keane said

Keane, who has followed the story as it developed from when Amorim first dropped Rashford from the squad, admitted to expecting the striker to leave in the winter.

However, he questioned the decision to join Villa, suggesting a move from Manchester United to the Birmingham-based side is a step-down, despite the Clarets and Blue playing in the Champions League compared to the Red Devils' Europa League participation.

"If he's lost the hunger at Man United, how will he get it at Aston Villa? Once you lose the hunger it's hard to get it back," Keane said. "It's sad but it's been on the cards for the last year or two, especially since the new manager has come in. Clearly, they didn't get on.

"The manager got no reaction from Marcus. The strange thing for me was I thought when Marcus was going to leave Man United he was going to go abroad and try something new. A new adventure for him, a different league, a different challenge.

"To go to Villa surprises me a little bit. I know Aston Villa are going along nicely, but you can't compare them to Manchester United."
