We believe God is sovereign, knows everything about us, and has a wonderful plan for our lives. Yet, trusting Him can sometimes be easier said than done. Life's challenges and hard times may shake our faith, leaving us wondering how to truly trust God when circumstances don't make sense. In this post, we'll explore the power of trusting God, its meaning, how to develop it, and Bible stories that demonstrate unwavering faith. If you've ever struggled with trust, keep reading for encouragement and practical steps to deepen your faith.
What Does It Mean to Trust in God?
Trusting someone means believing they are honest, dependable, and faithful. According to the Oxford Dictionary, trust involves confidence in someone's integrity and reliability.
The Biblical definition of trust, based on the Hebrew word batah, means "to have confidence; be secure in." When we trust in God, we believe in His character and His promises. We have confidence that God's Word is true and unchangeable.
Faith vs. Trust in God
Are faith and trust the same thing? Not quite. Faith is a gift from God. Ephesians 2:8 tells us, "It is by grace you are saved, through faith-and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God."
Trust, on the other hand, is a choice we make daily.
After we come to faith in Christ Jesus, trust allows us to believe that God will fulfill His promises. Trust puts our faith into action.
Sometimes we struggle to trust God because of fear, worry, or a desire for control. Yet, God calls us to be "all-in," unwavering in our trust in Him.
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight." Proverbs 3:5-6.
The Power of Trusting God
Trusting God brings joy, perfect peace, protection, comfort, and confidence. When we place our lives in His hands, we release our tendency to trust in our circumstances, other people, or ourselves.
The alternative? A life filled with anxiety, doubts, anger, and resentment. Learning to trust God takes time and effort, but it leads to a life of security and peace-exactly what Jesus desires for us.
"Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen." Ephesians 3:20-21.
Trusting God's Character
Think about what you know to be true about God. Can you name three attributes? Here are a few:
Compassionate- "He who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good thing so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's. Psalm 103:4-5.
Loving- "But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8
Truthful- "God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind." Numbers 23:19.
Caring- "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." 1 Peter 5:7.
Holy- "There is no one holy like the Lord; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God." Samuel 2:2.
All-powerful- "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." Matthew 19:26.
When we know God's power and character, we can trust Him in every situation. Let's look at some real-life examples of trusting God in difficult times.
Feeling Overwhelmed?
God wants us to rest in Him in difficult times. He sees you and knows what is overwhelming you. Speak to Him about what you are feeling and seek His wisdom.
"Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you." (Isaiah 41:10)
Struggling with God's Timing?
We've all probably wondered, "How much longer, Lord?" Even King David lamented, "How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?" Psalm 13:1. In these times, remember His timing is always perfect and He is right there with you.
"He is the Rock, His works are perfect, and all His ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, he is righteous and true." (Deuteronomy 32:4)
Doubting God's Plan?
Jesus understood the Father's plan of redemption and went willingly to the cross. But as He suffered a spiritual death- separated from His Father for the only time in His life- Jesus cries out in anguish:
"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Matthew 27:46.
God has expressed His unchanging heart for His people through the prophet Jeremiah, and we can still claim it today-
"For I know the plans I have for you... plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." (Jeremiah 29:11)

Bible Stories About Trusting God
Let's look at some Bible stories that show incredible trust in God.
Abraham and Isaac
God promised Abraham a son, and at the age of 100, Isaac was born. Later, God tested Abraham's trust by asking him to sacrifice Isaac.
Abraham followed all God's directions, but at the last moment, God intervened and provided a ram instead. Abraham trusted God deeply to provide for him. He trusted him to bring Isaac back to life if need be. He said, "God Himself will provide the lamb." Genesis 22:8.
Lesson: We can trust God to provide.
Jochebed, Mother of Moses
Moses' mother, Jochebed, trusted God to protect the life of her son. She placed him in a basket on the river to save his life.
God protected Moses and led him to Pharaoh's daughter. Moses's sister was watching and offered to find a woman to nurse him. God enabled Jochebed to be reunited with her son. (Exodus 2:1-10)
Lesson: God can make a way when there seems to be none!
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego Trusted God
Because these three men refused to bow down and worship King Nebuchadnezzar's statue, he threw them into a fiery furnace. God saved them, and they emerged unharmed. (Daniel 3:16-28)

Trusting God Through Prayer
We don't trust people we don't know. We have to get to know them. The same is true with God. Connecting in prayer deepens our relationship with Him.
Keeping a prayer journal can help you track God's faithfulness. When we look back on past prayers, we see how He has provided, even when His answers were different from our expectations.
Trusting God When He Says No
Sometimes, God's answer to the desires of your heart is "No." This can be difficult, but we must remember His plans are always greater than ours. He may be protecting us or giving us something better.
Even Jesus Christ prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as You will." (Matthew 26:39)
Lesson: We must trust God even when we don't understand His plan.
