David Alaba suffers fresh injury blow after Real Madrid return

Real Madrid defender David Alaba has suffered another injury blow, just weeks after returning from a long-term ACL recovery.

The Austrian, who spent over a year on the sidelines after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in December 2023, had only just rejoined the squad, making four substitute appearances in January.

However, Madrid confirmed on Tuesday that the 31-year-old has now sustained an adductor muscle injury in his left thigh.

While the club did not specify a recovery timeline, reports suggest Alaba could be out for two to three weeks.

His absence deepens Madrid's defensive crisis, with Eder Militao still recovering from his second ACL injury in two seasons.

Although recently injured, Antonio Rüdiger remains the only fit senior centre-back, forcing manager Carlo Ancelotti to rely on Aurelien Tchouameni as an emergency defender in recent games.

Madrid chose not to reinforce their defense in the January transfer window, believing Alaba's return would ease their problems.

Despite this setback, reports indicate they may still hold off on signing a new centre-back in the summer, banking on Militao's accelerated recovery.

With key matches ahead, Ancelotti will have to manage his defensive options carefully as Madrid continues its push for silverware this season.
