With a tough season unfolding, United now pursue Sporting winger Geovany Quenda amid mounting transfer pressure
Manchester United are in search of a fresh attacking option as their pursuit of Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel has collapsed, according to reports. The Red Devils, who are having a difficult season following a 2-0 home defeat to Crystal Palace-their 11th loss in 24 Premier League games-are determined to bolster their frontline before the transfer window shuts on Monday evening.
Under manager Ruben Amorim, United have been struggling to find their scoring touch, ranking 13th in the league with only four teams scoring fewer goals than them this campaign. In a bid to shake things up, Amorim recently experimented by benching Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee in favor of playing Kobbie Mainoo in an advanced false-nine role. Although the experiment did not yield immediate returns, the need for a new striker is becoming ever more urgent.
Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel had emerged as United's top target, with the Nigerian international reportedly favoring a move to Old Trafford. However, Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg revealed on Sunday night that negotiations between Manchester United and Bayern have completely collapsed. Plettenberg tweeted, "The negotiations between Manchester United and FC Bayern have now completely collapsed! Despite the player's preference to join #MUFC, no agreement could be reached - not even in the last two hours. Arsenal are still in the race, along with other options. Time is running!"
With Tel's move off the table, fresh reports from Spain indicate that United have made a £50m offer for Sporting CP winger Geovany Quenda. The deal is seen as a clear signal of the club's commitment to reinforcing their attack with promising young talent. Despite strong interest from other European giants, Manchester United believe Quenda could be a key part of their forward line for years to come.
Reflecting on what he described as a "hard day" for the team-further compounded by Lisandro Martinez's injury-manager Ruben Amorim said,
"Yes, it was a hard day for the team and the fans. We improved in some areas, controlling the game and maintaining possession, but we conceded two avoidable goals. Licha is very important for us, not just for his abilities on the pitch but also for the character he shows in tough moments. Now it's time for us to support him as he has always done for us."
As the transfer deadline looms, Manchester United continue to push for a solution to their attacking struggles, hoping that the potential addition of Geovany Quenda can spark a turnaround in their season.
