IDF announced that Israeli forces will remain in Syria indefinitely

Israel's Defense Minister announced that Israeli forces would remain in Syria indefinitely, maintaining positions they seized after the collapse of Bashar al-Assad's regime last year. As reported by The Times of Israel.

Initially, Israel framed its military presence in Syria as a temporary measure to secure a previously demilitarized buffer zone, aimed at preventing hostile forces from entering this area amidst the power vacuum left by Assad's regime. However, Israel Katz, during a visit to Mount Hermon on the Syrian side of the border, confirmed that Israeli forces would stay "for an unlimited time" to ensure the safety of the Golan Heights, northern settlements, and all of Israel's residents.

Katz emphasized that Israel would not rely on external forces for its defense and would act decisively against any threats in the region. His remarks came despite Syria's objections, which have been voiced by officials such as de facto leader Ahmed al-Sharaa. Syria condemned Israel's land seizure, calling it a pretext, although they have expressed a preference to avoid further conflicts, focusing instead on rebuilding their country.

This announcement coincided with Israeli military actions in Lebanon, where airstrikes targeted Hezbollah vehicles, leading to injuries. These strikes marked some of the heaviest since the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah came into effect in November. Despite the ceasefire, the violence has continued, with at least 61 people reported dead in Lebanon since the agreement.

Israel's recent incursions into Syria involved taking control of key positions, including Jabal al-Shaykh, a strategic Syrian military location. This action has drawn widespread condemnation, particularly from countries like Turkey and Egypt, who accuse Israel of exploiting Syria's instability to expand its territorial control. Meanwhile, the UN has raised concerns that Israel's actions could undermine the potential for a peaceful resolution in Syria.
