According to report, Donald Trump, the former President of the United States, has issued a stern warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin, threatening to impose higher tariffs and additional sanctions unless Russia ends its ongoing war in Ukraine.
In a post on Truth Social on Wednesday, Trump emphasized that his efforts to end the war would benefit both Russia and its leader, declaring, "I'm going to do Russia, whose economy is failing, and President Putin, a very big favor."
He continued, urging Russia to "settle now" and put an end to the conflict, warning that failure to do so would lead to worse consequences.
Trump's message was clear: "Let's get this war, which never would have started if I were President, over with! We can do it the easy way, or the hard way - and the easy way is always better."
Trump also reiterated his belief that he could resolve the war quickly, claiming he could negotiate a settlement in just one day.
During a press conference on Tuesday, he revealed plans to speak with Putin "very soon," adding that imposing tougher sanctions seemed likely if no progress was made.
Trump warned that if a peace deal is not reached, he would impose "high levels of Taxes, Tariffs, and Sanctions" on Russian exports to the US and its allies, further escalating the pressure on Russia.
While Russia has not officially responded to Trump's comments, Dmitry Polyanskiy, Russia's deputy UN ambassador, told Reuters that the Kremlin would require more clarity on Trump's expectations for a peace deal before taking any action.
On the other hand, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, speaking at the World Economic Forum, highlighted the need for a significant number of peacekeepers to enforce any potential agreement, proposing a force of at least 200,000 personnel.
Zelensky also suggested that US troops would be critical in this peacekeeping force, emphasizing that their presence would serve as a credible deterrent to Russia.
The war, which began in 2014 and intensified with Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has caused immense devastation for both nations, with no resolution in sight.
