'I made a mistake' - Man United boss Ruben Amorim gives honest answer about smashing TV

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has spoken out about his outburst following his side's 3-1 defeat at home to Brighton last weekend.

United succumbed to another defeat and the Portuguese boss responded by smashing a TV used for tactics after the game.

Amorim has endured a shaky start since taking charge of United in November

The loss prompted Amorim to say his side are 'worst Manchester United team in history'.

Speaking ahead of their Europa League clash with Rangers on Thursday, Amorim clarified his recent actions.

He said: "I didn't think, that's why. I'm a young guy and sometimes I make a mistake. That's why I don't [usually] speak after the game. This game, I needed to talk and maybe it was a mistake.

"Then I get more nervous and go to the [press] conference really nervous and say things you should not say.

"I don't promise I will not do it again. I don't know, but I'll try to improve."

He also clarified his comments on being 'nervous' and insisted he was misunderstood.

Amorim added: "I did not say I was nervous. I said the team was nervous and I was frustrated.

"Frustrated is different from nervous. If you say for the players it is good to see the coach frustrated, maybe not, but I did not say I was nervous.

"We, as a team, it is always, we. I am saying the obvious, if you want, I can be delusional and say different things.

"I say it as I saw it and I say to the players. It is a good thing to be honest with you.

"If you want me to say different things - I saw one thing and I tell you a different thing - I can start to do that, it is easier for me. I am not nervous, I am frustrated.

Amorim owned up to smashing the TV in his press conference on Wednesday

"Every time you [the press] push about the players not being good enough, so I understand that I gave you that headline.

"I am frustrated sometimes, and I shouldn't say things in those terms, but it is what it is. Sometimes it is really hard to hide the frustration. The good thing is I said the same things in the dressing room five minutes before.

Harry Maguire also joined Amorim in his press conference, adding that the squad 'have to look at ourselves and take responsibility on ourselves'.

"Football matches are sometimes defined on small margins and at the moment we aren't getting those because we aren't mentally focused enough to make them go our away," Maguire said.

Man United host Scottish side Rangers on Thursday evening in the Europa League before travelling to the capital to face Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Man United have struggled to improve under Amorim

Amorim's side are currently languishing in 13th in the Premier League and must find form soon if they aim to secure European football again next season.

They are seventh in the Europa League table towards the bottom of the automatic qualification zone.

A win over Rangers could see them move into third with just one more match to play in the league phase.
