Paul Scholes urges Man Utd to sell eight players as Garnacho and Mainoo verdict given

Paul Scholes wants Man Utd to sell eight players.

Paul Scholes has named eight Manchester United players he wants Ruben Amorim to cull at the start of his mammoth rebuild at Old Trafford while calling for three to remain. United are working to upgrade Amorim's underperforming squad by sanctioning multiple departures before the January transfer window closes.

Antony is reportedly set to join Real Betis on loan until the end of the season. Marcus Rashford and Tyrell Malacia are also widely expected to be loaned out before 11pm on February 3.

Meanwhile, Alejandro Garnacho could leave in a permanent deal in the coming week, with Napoli said to be pressing for his signature.

It's claimed United are holding out for £59million and that Chelsea join the Serie A giants as the frontrunners for the 20-year-old winger.

Exits will unlock signings. The Red Devils are reportedly in talks with Lecce over talented left-wing-back Patrick Dorgu.

The Athletic state that work is ongoing to secure another recruit on top of the 20-year-old before the winter deadline.

More outgoings will be on the agenda in the summer when Amorim's reshaping of the squad is truly set to commence.

Scholes, while playing a game of 'Keep or Sell?' for TNT Sports, has called on United to axe eight first-team players to raise funds.

The midfield icon wants his former club to sell centre-back duo Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez, as well as injury-stricken left-back Luke Shaw.

He also rued Mason Mount's injury woes and admitted he would have no problems if he departed after struggling to make an impact after his £55m arrival from Chelsea in 2023.

Scholes unsurprisingly agreed that Casemiro, too, had to leave, with the Brazilian midfielder out of favour under Amorim and turning 33 next month.

The 50-year-old also pinpointed Antony and Rashford as players who should leave permanently rather than on loan.

And £36.5m summer signing Joshua Zirkzee didn't escape the chopping block, having scored just four goals in 31 appearances this season.

Scholes doesn't want Amorim to axe his whole squad, though, and has defended under-fire goalkeeper Andre Onana.

That said, his comments came days before the Cameroon international's latest blunder in Sunday's 3-1 defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion.

Scholes also wants Garnacho to remain at Old Trafford but suggested he was open to boosting the budget with his sale.

However, the United great was adamant in insisting that Kobbie Mainoo should be off the table, branding the 19-year-old midfielder as one of the club's most exciting players.
