The Anambra State Government has taken decisive action by shutting down a notorious brothel in Amawbia, located within the Awka South Local Government Area. According to reports from PUNCH Newspaper, the operation, carried out by the state's Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA) Brigade, targeted a facility that had been a hotbed for criminal activities, including the exploitation of underaged sex workers, drug trafficking, and armed robbery.
According to reports, the brothel, whose name has been withheld for legal reasons, was infamous for harboring individuals involved in a range of illegal activities. During the raid, the enforcement team rescued at least 10 sex workers, including several underaged girls. The authorities were responding to intelligence reports that highlighted the facility's role in facilitating various criminal enterprises, including the trafficking of drugs and the involvement of armed robbers.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Managing Director of OCHA, Celestine Anere, explained that the operation was the result of thorough monitoring and investigation. Anere confirmed that the brothel had long been suspected of harboring individuals engaged in illegal activities that posed a significant threat to public safety.
"This operation was carried out after an intelligence report showed that their illegal activities had aided all kinds of crimes, ranging from drug trafficking to under-aged sex workers," Anere said. "The brothel is also a hideout for armed robbers and all sorts of criminal activities."
The government has vowed to ensure that the operators of the brothel face the full extent of the law. Authorities emphasized that those responsible for running such illegal establishments will be arrested and prosecuted, sending a strong message to others who may be engaged in similar activities within the state.
Anere further stressed the importance of ensuring that the perpetrators are held accountable for their actions, not only to bring justice to the victims but also to deter other individuals from engaging in criminal behavior. The rescue of the underaged victims underscores the state's commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals and combating human trafficking.
The operation is part of an ongoing effort by the Anambra State Government to combat criminal activities and ensure a safer environment for its citizens.
