Nine states begin 2-day American flag football championship in Calabar

No fewer than 180 secondary school students are participating in the Nigerian Secondary School Flag Football League Season 3 - Aketi Bowl II, otherwise called American flag football championship.

The 2-day championship kicked off Wednesday morning at the UJ Esuene Stadium, Calabar.

The championship is organised by Nigerian Secondary School Flag Football League, NSSFFL, in collaboration with Cross River State government.

Most of the participants are from nine states, representing 18 schools, 36 teams, totalling 180 student-athletes.

Akwa Ibom male team are current defending champions from the previous championship held in Akure, Ondo State.

Speaking to journalists in Calabar, the National president of the Nigeria American Football Association, NAFA, Babajide Akeredolu said "the journey has been remarkable, and Aketi Bowl II promises to be the crowning achievement of a season that has brought American football closer to the hearts of Nigerians."

According to him, since inception, the NSSFFL had grown exponentially, becoming a beacon of opportunity for young athletes across Nigeria.

"The NSSFFL is intended for students in secondary schools between the ages of 12-18.

"The primary focus of the league is obtaining educational and sports scholarships for the winning teams and, if possible, spreading opportunities for the participating athletes as well," he said.

Akeredolu disclosed that two Cross River players are already enjoying scholarships in US universities.

Permanent Secretary in the state ministry of youths and sports, Samuel Egbala expressed happiness for the choice of the state to host the championship, adding that they are ready to provide conducive environment.
