Chibuike Ikenga, spokesperson for a faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, has assessed the re-election chances of Governor Siminalayi Fubara in 2027, during an interview with DAILY POST.
According to him, Fubara's political future heavily depends on mending his relationships with key allies, especially Nyesom Wike.
Governor Fubara, a member of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), has faced backlash for allegedly sidelining those who played pivotal roles in his emergence as governor.
Among those affected is Nyesom Wike, the former governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
Wike, who maintains a strong grip on the PDP's structure in Rivers State have distanced himself from Fubara due to ongoing political fight between them.
Ikenga believes the governor's chances of retaining his position in 2027 will be slim unless he reconciles with Wike and other influential figures in the party.
He highlighted that Fubara's association with individuals who initially opposed his governorship has deepened the divisions within the party, further alienating his original supporters.
"That's without diminishing his [Fubara] status as governor of Rivers State. He has broken the relationship. But if he can do anything to rescue that relationship, then he has a chance. He has a chance to rescue the relationship with his benefactors, particularly as led by the FCT Minister and other leaders of his party.
But if that is not done between now and in the next three months, it will be too hot for him to see a leeway to retain the governorship," he said.
