In a candid interview with SYMFONI TV, Rivers State's former Governor, Nyesom Wike, has declared that he would have supported Peter Obi's victory in the 2023 presidential election if circumstances had played out differently. Speaking during a public event, Wike praised the people of Rivers for their electoral decision and emphasized the need for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to reflect on its setbacks.
"I understand the sentiments surrounding the 2023 election, and I genuinely wouldn't have minded if Peter Obi had emerged victorious," Wike said. "I commend all the people of Rivers for their decisive choice against Atiku. It's important for the PDP to reflect on this outcome and learn from the experiences of our community."
Wike also criticized the state of politics in Nigeria, lamenting the lack of integrity among political actors. He stressed that he remains steadfast in his convictions and actions, unlike others who he described as inconsistent.
"People are terrible in politics. There are those who cannot stand on what they say. When I say something, you go home and sleep; I said it," he stated. "If I want to oppose anybody, I will oppose you. Heaven will not come down! Go to heaven, and now heaven has come, what are we suffering again? So people should know me for that."
The former governor didn't hold back in addressing what he termed as "characters without trustworthiness." He pointed to politicians who, in his words, lack the moral fiber to maintain consistent positions.
"Characters who you cannot trust, characters who will go in the night, say they are members of this party, then in the daytime, they come out and say a different thing, simply because they want a position," he said.
Wike specifically criticized an unnamed candidate from the All Progressives Congress (APC) who, according to him, exhibited questionable behavior.
"Look at the APC candidate. Look at him! He posted congratulating; within one hour, he pulled it out. Is that a man? Is that character? You know, you know, I don't understand," Wike remarked.
The former governor's comments have sparked discussions about loyalty and transparency in Nigerian politics. As the country continues to navigate post-election challenges, Wike's stance adds another layer to the ongoing conversation about leadership and integrity in governance.
