Man Utd set to earn fortune on Mason Greenwood due to clause after his price skyrockets

Mason Greenwood could indirectly help Manchester United out in the transfer window thanks to a potentially lucrative clause in his contract.

Mason Greenwood may no longer be a Manchester United player, but his performances could still prove lucrative for the club. The 23-year-old footballer transferred to Marseille last summer in a deal worth £25.6million, subsequently ending his 17-year stint with the Red Devils.

Since then, he has been in bright form, scoring 11 goals in 17 appearances across all competitions for the Ligue 1 team this season. Despite severing ties with the forward, United stand to benefit from his continued success in France due to a 'sizeable' sell-on clause inserted into his Marseille contract.

As reported by TBR Football, this clause could be as high as 50 per cent, potentially earning United millions if Greenwood is sold to another club. Recent reports suggest that Greenwood's impressive performances have caught the attention of football giants Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Juventus and Barcelona - who have had their eyes on the English player for some time.

It is believed that a bid of approximately £60m would be sufficient to secure Greenwood's services, which would result in a windfall of around £30m for United. Old Trafford's top brass would certainly welcome a lucrative deal, especially considering minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe's fiscal conservatism since assuming control of the club's football operations last year.

New manager Ruben Amorim is likely eager to recruit fresh talent to shape the team in his vision. But with finances currently strained, transfer plans have reportedly been downsized.

A sensational move for Sporting CP forward Viktor Gyokeres is being considered, but recent rumours linking United with a loan swoop for PSG's Randal Kolo Muani suggest that the Swedish player may be beyond their budget at least for now. After all, his release clause is set at £83m, and with heavyweights like Bayern Munich, PSG and Arsenal also vying for him, his price tag could potentially skyrocket.

Elsewhere, a potential move for Victor Osimhen, currently on loan from Napoli at Galatasaray, has been mooted for United. The Nigerian striker has been scoring prolifically in Turkey, but his loan contract includes a break clause that would allow him to sign with another club if Napoli receives a satisfactory offer.

Amorim is also said to be interested in signing one or two wing-backs this month. This position is crucial in his 3-4-3 formation, and it's an area where United are currently lacking.

Marseille's potential sale of Greenwood, who was on loan from United at La Liga club Getafe last season, could provide a financial boost for the Portuguese coach. However, there's no certainty this will happen in the near future.

Greenwood celebrating

Currently, Marseille are performing very well in Ligue 1, sitting just below league-leaders PSG. Greenwood has been instrumental to their recent success, and a departure midway through the season could be seriously detrimental to the club's aspirations.

After finishing eighth - their poorest domestic performance in nearly 10 years - in the 2023/24 season, they are eager to bounce back and secure a Champions League spot. Yet, if Greenwood maintains his impressive form, the French club might not be able to hold onto him for long.
