Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed on Monday that around 15,000 Russian soldiers were killed in fighting in the Kursuk region.
Zelesnky allegedly said that the Russian army was busted with heavy losses during five months of fighting in the Kursk region. This comes after Kyiv's surprise attack on the Kursk region where Russian troops were positioned.
"During the Kursk operation, the enemy has already lost 38,000 of their soldiers in this direction alone, with nearly 15,000 of these losses being irreversible," Ukraine's president said.
Zelensky posted the video statement on X and wrote: "The Russians have deployed their strongest units to Kursk, including soldiers from North Korea. Importantly, all this manpower cannot now be redirected to other fronts-neither to the Donetsk region, nor against Sumy, the Kharkiv region, or Zaporizhzhia."
The news followed the reports by the Russian Ministry of Defence which stated on Sunday that Ukrainian military forces had kicked off a new offensive amid their incursion into Russia via the Kursk region.
On the other hand, Andriy Kovalenko, a senior official with Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, posted on Telegram and confirmed the Ukrainian operation.
The war between Russia and Ukraine is still ongoing since Russian President Vladimir Putin announced in February 2022 a "special military operation" in Kyiv. Russian military forces were seen in video entering neighboring country shortly following Putin's announcement.
