At one stage this season, it looked like Chelsea would not have to do anything during the January transfer window.
However, after a poor run of form and injuries, that now looks to have changed. Chelsea have taken just four points from their last four games, drawing 1-1 with Crystal Palace last time out.
They have also lost Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile to injuries, which has not helped them.
Last month, Enzo Maresca said he was not thinking about the transfer window. But with it now here, he may get the club to act after what has happened in recent weeks.
Enzo Maresca keen to strengthen defence, midfield and up front
Unsurprisingly, with Fofana ruled out for a long time, it appears that Maresca wants a new central defender.
However, that is not the only area of Chelsea's squad that could be strengthened this month.
According to journalist Simon Phillips, as well as a centre-back, Maresca also wants another midfielder and a striker.
On his Substack Si Phillips Talks Chelsea, Phillips wrote: "Another top SPTC source has confirmed this weekend that Maresca wants a new centre back in this month, and also midfield cover."
He later added: "We have also heard that he wants a new striker in as well but has accepted that might have to wait until the summer."
Exits are also expected before the transfer window closes in February. West Ham have an interest in Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Carney Chukwuemeka.
Chelsea should consider recalling Trevoh Chalobah
If Maresca feels that his squad needs another central defender, then recalling Trevoh Chalobah could be the smart thing to do.
Chalobah has really impressed at Palace this season, even managing to score a few goals for the Eagles.
He is currently making 1.6 interceptions per game, which is the third-highest average in Oliver Glasner's squad, while he is also making 4.8 clearances, the second highest.
Trevoh Chalobah's 2024/25 Premier League stats | Total or average |
Games | 12 |
Minutes | 1063 |
Goals | 3 |
Assists | 0 |
Tackles (per game) | 1.7 |
Interceptions (per game) | 1.6 |
Clearances (per game) | 4.8 |
Aerial duels won (per game) | 1.8 |
In an ideal world, Chelsea would go out and sign an experienced and world-class centre-half. Chelsea are really missing Thiago Silva, which has been clear to see in recent weeks after all of the goals that they have conceded.
But if they cannot get that this month and Maresca requires another centre-half, then bringing Chalobah back to Stamford Bridge has to be an option for the club.
