Chelsea missed an opportunity to lead the Premier League table heading into Christmas, as they were held to a goalless draw by Everton at Goodison Park. The Toffees, buoyed by a recent change in ownership, have now avoided defeat in six of their last seven home encounters against Chelsea, continuing their reputation as tough hosts.
The visitors dominated the opening stages but struggled to convert possession into meaningful chances. Chelsea's first significant opportunity came around the 30th minute when Cole Palmer teed up Nicolas Jackson. Jordan Pickford reacted swiftly to save Jackson's effort, and Malo Gusto squandered the rebound, blazing over. Minutes later, Jackson's header struck the woodwork, and Gusto once again failed to capitalize on the follow-up. Everton, despite limited possession, threatened through Abdoulaye Doucouré's counterattacks, with Orel Mangala testing Robert Sánchez from range.
Everton's defensive discipline has been a hallmark under Sean Dyche, who has overseen six clean sheets since October - the most in Europe's top five leagues. The hosts nearly broke the deadlock early in the second half when Sánchez made a stunning close-range save to deny Jack Harrison. Everton's momentum grew, with Sánchez called into action again to intercept Jesper Lindstrøm's dangerous cross.
Chelsea's lack of clinical finishing proved costly. The Blues were left frustrated by Everton's organized defense and Pickford's commanding presence in goal. Enzo Maresca's men remain second in the table, two points behind Liverpool, as their Christmas plans for top spot fell apart.
For Everton, the draw marked another step forward under Dyche. Climbing to 15th, the Toffees continue to show grit despite managing just one win in their last eight league outings. This point provides optimism as they look to steer clear of the relegation battle.
