Media personality, Gbemi O sparks a debate on women's identity and submission, wondering why Love Oyedepo and Deborah Eneche still use their fathers' names after marriage.
The media personality asked a thought-provoking question on her Instagram story, asking why Love Oyedepo and Deborah Eneche, the daughters of Nigerian pastors continue to use their father's name after marriage.
She said that instead of using their husbands' surnames alone, as is customary in society, the women joined their husbands' names to their maiden names once they were married.
She claims that most people would have raised their eyebrows if a middle-class lady had used her father's last name while married. She questioned whether middle-class marriages are the only ones that require submissiveness.
Below are some reactions,
@Dat_Oronboy If I marry Dangote or Otedola daughter... I will add their father's name to mine
@ify_oloye When the Bible says women be submissive to your husband, did God say poor woman
@tosinjones_gidi Me I don't have any issues if my wife Adds her fathers name when we get married It changes nothing
@OluwaViolence People retained names that brings them good fortune, connections and recognition. If those guys family name was to be famous and influenced the women would have to switch. Even 3rd generation of Awo are still using the name. People like seyi are 3rd to 4th Gen but still use Awo.
