INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu Alive and Well, Rumors Declared Fake

According to a report, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), is alive and in good health, contrary to rumors circulating on social media. The clarification was made by Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to Prof. Yakubu, in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja.

Oyekanmi denounced the false reports claiming that the INEC Chairman had passed away at a London hospital, describing them as baseless and misleading. He stated that the fake news first surfaced on Monday, December 9, and urged the public to disregard the misinformation.

"Prof. Yakubu is alive, hale and hearty," Oyekanmi said. He further revealed that the Chairman had not traveled to London in the last two years. To dispel any doubts, Oyekanmi confirmed that Prof. Yakubu attended an interactive session with the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters on Wednesday, December 11.

The statement highlights the dangers of fake news and its potential to cause unnecessary alarm. Oyekanmi reassured Nigerians that Prof. Yakubu remains focused on his duties as the head of the electoral commission, emphasizing the importance of credible information in maintaining public trust.

The clarification serves as a reminder to verify news from reliable sources to combat the spread of false narratives. Prof. Mahmood Yakubu continues to lead INEC, contributing to the nation's democratic processes.
