On December 10, 2005, Sosoliso Airlines Flight 1145 crash-landed at Port Harcourt International Airport, which resulted in the death of 108 people onboard. The McDonnell Douglas DC-9 was en route from Abuja to Port Harcourt, carrying 110 people. The 108 people who lost their lives included 60 students from Loyola Jesuit College in Abuja.
The crash occurred during heavy rain and poor visibility, with the aircraft bursting into flames upon impact. An investigation revealed that the crew did not adequately respond to weather conditions and failed to execute a safe landing. The airport's lack of functioning emergency equipment also affected rescue efforts.
This devastating incident was one of the most unforgettable disasters in Nigerian history and another reminder of serious safety and regulatory deficiencies in Nigeria's aviation sector.
