Former President Goodluck Jonathan has called on the people of Rivers State to support Governor Siminalayi Fubara amid ongoing political tensions. Jonathan made the appeal during the first Etche Festival of Food, Art, and Culture held in Nihi Community, Etche Local Government Area, on Sunday. The event, which also marked the 10th anniversary of the coronation of Eze Nwala, Onye Ishi Agwuru III of Ulakwo-Umuselem, was attended by prominent leaders and dignitaries.
Jonathan, who was conferred with the traditional title of Eze Udo 1 of Etche, emphasized the critical role Rivers State plays in the Niger Delta and the broader Nigerian economy. He warned that political unrest in the state could have significant consequences for the region and the nation.
"We want a peaceful Rivers State because Rivers State is the center of the Niger Delta. If we create serious perturbation in Rivers State, we are creating a crisis in the Niger Delta, which is not good for our economy as a nation," Jonathan stated.
Addressing the importance of political stability, the former president urged the people to allow Governor Fubara to perform his duties without interference. He reminded them that political positions are temporary and should not be a source of conflict.
"In political office, we have tenures. We don't need to kill ourselves over any political office. Allow those who are there to do their work, and after that, anything can happen," Jonathan said.
He also encouraged Governor Fubara to remain resolute in the face of political challenges, describing such experiences as part of the journey of leadership.
"We want the governor of Rivers State to be allowed to remain calm and do his work. After he finishes serving, another person will take over," he added.
Jonathan's remarks underscored the need for unity, peace, and a collective focus on the development of Rivers State and the Niger Delta region as a whole.
