According to Time, On Thursday, the Israeli military conducted airstrikes on southern Lebanon, targeting a Hezbollah rocket storage site. This marked the first strike since a ceasefire was brokered between Israel and Hezbollah earlier this week.
Israel accused Hezbollah of breaching the truce, stating that "several suspects were identified arriving with vehicles to a number of areas in southern Lebanon, breaching the conditions of the ceasefire." The military added that troops "opened fire toward them" and would "actively enforce violations of the ceasefire agreement."
The agreement, facilitated by the U.S. and France, initiated a two-month ceasefire requiring Hezbollah militants to retreat north of the Litani River and for Israeli troops to withdraw to their side of the border. A buffer zone is to be monitored by Lebanese forces and U.N. peacekeepers.
Despite warnings from the Israeli and Lebanese armies to avoid certain areas, displaced Lebanese civilians began returning to their homes on Wednesday. Over 1.2 million were displaced in Lebanon during the 14-month conflict, which claimed over 3,760 Lebanese lives, predominantly civilians. On the Israeli side, more than 70 were killed, including civilians and soldiers.
As both sides cautiously navigate the ceasefire, tensions remain high, raising doubts about the truce's longevity.
