Russia launched its largest drone attack on Ukraine overnight, deploying an unprecedented 188 drones, including Shaheds, in a coordinated offensive, Ukrainian officials reported on Tuesday.
The attack, which targeted several regions, caused significant damage to infrastructure and disrupted power supplies.
According to Ukrainian authorities, air defense systems intercepted and destroyed 76 of the drones. However, 96 drones managed to evade defenses due to the effectiveness of Russian electronic warfare measures. This left a trail of destruction, with homes near Kyiv sustaining damage and power outages reported in Ternopil.
The Ukrainian Air Force described the assault as one of the most intense drone operations in the ongoing conflict. "The scale of this attack demonstrates a continued escalation in Russia's tactics," a military official said, emphasizing the challenges posed by electronic warfare in countering such assaults.
The drone strikes follow weeks of heightened tensions between the two nations, with Russia increasingly relying on unmanned aerial systems to target Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. Shahed drones, reportedly supplied by Iran, have been a cornerstone of these operations.
In Ternopil, local officials reported widespread power outages affecting thousands of residents. Emergency crews are working to restore services, while repair efforts continue in Kyiv's suburbs to address structural damages to homes.
