During an appearance on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, FC Barcelona player Robert Lewandowski confessed that he once agreed to join Manchester United.
The Pole has been with Barcelona since 2022, after the Catalans paid Bayern Munich a staggering $52 million (€50 million) for his services.
However, a decade ago, when still at his previous club, Borussia Dortmund, the Bavarians' primary domestic competitor, the number 9 told then-Red Devils manager Sir Alex Ferguson that he was considering a move to the Premier League, as he told Ferdinand.
"I remember having a talk with Sir Alex Ferguson, for example. "That was 2012," Lewandowski remembered.
When asked if he "almost signed for United," Lewandowski responded that he "decided to join" the Manchester club.
"I recall the talk that occurred in the... Before preseason, we were playing some games... I knew he would call me. And I was substituted at halftime because I knew I was only going to play 45 minutes. I received the call.
"And at the time, my English was at a different level. And especially if I'm going to chat with the type of guy Sir Alex Ferguson is phoning me, which I'm doing right now.
Lewandowski admitted he was "very" worried about calling the Scot.
"And, you know, he's going to speak simple English, right? And he called, 'Hello, my name is Robert Lewandowski'.Yes, hello, hello...You know, this Scottish accent!
