The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a prophetess, Folashade Kikiowo Adekola, over the d3ath of a 28-year-old woman, Jumoke Adesuwa, and her newborn baby.
It was gathered that Adesuwa bled to d3ath from complications after childbirth at the prophetess' church, Christ Engracing Deliverance Ministry, located in the Oke-Aro area of Akure, the state capital.
The newborn reportedly d!ed immediately.
The prophetess was arrested after Adesuwa's brother reported the matter to the Oke Aro Police Station.
The spokesperson of the command, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, who confirmed the arrest in an interview on Tuesday, November 12, stated that Adekola had been taken to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for further investigation.
"The case was reported by the deceased's brother who informed us that his sister d!ed after childbirth in the church. The prophetess is now in custody, and investigations are ongoing," Odunlami said.
It was learnt that Adesuwa left her house for days, to the church for spiritual incarceration towards her delivery, without her husband's knowledge.
A family source who pleaded anonymity revealed that the deceased's husband, Ayodele Adesuwa, had earlier given her money to register at any government hospital. But she did not tell her husband when she left the house for five days to the church, for spiritual incarceration towards her delivery.
"The husband of the deceased came from the farm in Idanre after five days away from home and asked for his wife. So, one of the neighours told him that she had left for church to be delivered of a baby," the source narrated.
"Someone from the church called in the evening to inform him that his wife had been delivered of a baby. The deceased's husband called me and we rushed to the said church called 'Muzuzo' at Oke-Aro.
"When we got there, we were told that the baby d!ed in the process, but the mother was alive. On sighting the deceased, we saw her in a pool of blood bleeding profusely. So, we rushed her to a nearby hospital."
"Due to the worst condition of the deceased, she was rejected at three hospitals and she d!ed in the process of reviving her in the last hospital that admitted her.
"To our surprise, we got to the church to collect the baby's remains and we found the corpse in a room in the church. The condition of the room was very worrisome as it does not look like a delivery room.
"We approached the Oke-Aro Police station in Akure to report the case which led to the arrest of the prophetess in charge. The remains of the woman have been deposited at the mortuary," he added.
