The Ruben Amorim era is underway at Carrington where the new head coach will be running the rule over his squad.
Ever since Manchester United announced that Ruben Amorim would take charge, excitement has been at a fever pitch amongst the fanbase.
39-year-old head coach Ruben Amorim did nothing to ease expectations as his Sporting Lisbon side thrashed Manchester City 4-1 in the Champions League last week.
But now as he gets stuck in on the Manchester United training ground, the squad are all under review and there could be a handful who are in trouble.
Here are the five current United players who have an uncertain future under Amorim - including some long-term servants.
Antony
The first name on the list for us is Antony, with the 24-year-old Brazilian firmly defined as a flop within the ranks at Old Trafford.
Costing £86m, the former Ajax man has not looked like a player worth even 50 per cent of that value since his move in 2022.
Antony lost his place under Erik ten Hag, Amorim will likely also find more impressive players in the squad and determine his future lies elsewhere.
However, Amorim's previous meeting against Antony saw the No.21 at his very best, which could give him a chance - maybe even as a wing-back.
However, all likelihoods suggest he will exit.
Jonny Evans
The second name is one which would have likely been in his last year playing for the club regardless of who came in, but Jonny Evans could struggle under Amorim.
This is less of a criticism of Evans and more an admission that under Amorim, a 36-year-old centre-back is unlikely to be used as he would - hopefully - opt for an academy player instead.
Evans has been far better than he should be for United since returning in 2023. However, a team performing to an optimal level should not be playing him as often - which we are sure Evans himself would agree with.
Currently studying for his coaching badges, perhaps Evans will take up a player/coach role in the academy after this season. But one this seems certain, he will not be getting minutes for United.
Tyrell Malacia
The situation of Tyrell Malacia is an incredible one, as the Dutchman has missed over 17 months of action - failing to make an appearance since May 2023.
Malacia was 23 when he was first ruled out injured during pre-season of the 2023/24 season and is now 25 which is a sad truth over his injury problems.
However, it is not his injury problems which has us assuming he has an uncertain future - but rather he simply doesn't fit into any role in Amorim's style.
The 3-4-3 formation uses more wingers than wing-backs and Malacia is not good enough going forward to fill this role which could leave him searching for a new club in 2025.
Christian Eriksen
There is no denying that Christian Eriksen is a wonderful footballer, but we struggle to see where he fits in for Amorim - despite being in excellent form.
For United, Eriksen has been deployed primarily as a midfielder alongside Casemiro or Kobbie Mainoo - however, this could change under Amorim.
The former Sporting Lisbon boss prefers to use one more defensive midfielder and then a box-to-box midfielder - neither role suiting Eriksen.
Perhaps he could be used as one of the inside forwards/attacking midfielders - but we reckon he will depart in 2025.
Luke Shaw
The final name on our list is Luke Shaw as the 29-year-old has been absent through injury since February - and like Malacia does not quite fit in as a wing-back in Amorim's system.
Shaw's career has been plagued by injuries and right now he is having a worse spell than he has in years, which combined with his age could suggest the end is near.
However, with two and half years remaining on his contract, the club will have to find a buyer.
With Amorim likely to want youth injected in at wing-back and players who can be consistent threats in attack, Shaw just simply doesn't have a place - even if he managed to get fit.
