Nigerian Billionaires use different methods to invest their money, showing the variety of Nigeria's economy and their smart business skills.
A report from UBS mentions that three billionaires Aliko Dangote, Mike Adenuga, and Abdulsamad Rabiu helped increase Nigeria's wealth by 19.7% in just one year.
Analysis from Henley & Partners found that Nigerian billionaires are interested in industries like agriculture, logistics, commodities, communications, financial services, infrastructure, retail, manufacturing, and real estate.
Investing in Stocks
Many Nigerian billionaires invest heavily in the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NGX). They own large shares in companies that range from financial institutions to agriculture supply and energy companies.
For example, Aliko Dangote owns big parts of several major companies, some of which he started himself. Others like Jim Ovia, Fola Adeola, and Atedo Peterside have investments in banks like Zenith and GTBank through direct ownership or through their family offices and holding companies.
Diversifying Their Investments
Even though many are known for specific industries, like Dangote with cement and sugar, they spread their investments into other areas such as real estate, banking, insurance, and manufacturing. This helps them reduce the risk of losing money if one industry has problems.
Investing in Private Equity and Startups
Some of these wealthy individuals also put money into private equity funds or venture capital, which involves investing in startups or small to medium businesses that have a lot of potential to grow. These investments are usually private until the businesses become public or are sold for a profit.
Looking Abroad for Opportunities
Wealthy Nigerians also look for investment opportunities outside Nigeria, especially in other African countries or around the world in industries they know well. They might invest directly or form partnerships with international companies.
Real Estate Investments
Real estate is another area where they invest, often using mechanisms from the capital market like Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs) or loans that are secured by property. This shows another way they connect their investments to the broader financial market.
Philanthropy as Investment
Philanthropy, or donating money to help others, is another way these billionaires invest. People like Tony Elumelu see giving back to the community through education, health, and development projects as an investment that improves society and helps their businesses indirectly by creating a better business environment and reducing taxes.
Protecting Their Money
Because the Nigerian currency can be unstable, some rich Nigerians keep or invest in assets overseas like properties, stocks, or gold. This helps protect their wealth from losing value due to currency issues.
