According to a report by Manchester Evening News, Ruben Amorim encountered his first major challenge with Manchester United during the club's recent 1-1 draw against Chelsea.
Although Amorim's tenure officially begins next week, it's evident he's already considering plans for United, particularly as he observed critical midfield weaknesses in the Chelsea match.
Known as one of Europe's most promising young managers, Amorim was appointed following Erik ten Hag's departure, impressing United's new owners with his vision for the club.
A part of that vision will involve rejuvenating Manuel Ugarte, a midfielder who previously thrived under Amorim's guidance at Sporting Lisbon.
However, since joining Manchester United, Ugarte's performances have been inconsistent, especially when placed in a 4-3-3 formation rather than Amorim's familiar 3-4-3 system.
Though Ugarte showed promise in the midweek 5-2 victory over Leicester City, he struggled to keep pace against Chelsea, highlighting issues in United's midfield.
Throughout the match, Ugarte, alongside Casemiro, failed to assert control in central areas, as Chelsea's Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia dictated play.
Ugarte's passing faltered, and he was unable to prevent gaps from forming in United's defensive structure.
His lack of assertiveness became apparent in the second half when Matthijs de Ligt reprimanded him for avoiding an aerial challenge, underscoring the urgency of Amorim's task to restore Ugarte's confidence and discipline.
In response, Ruud van Nistelrooy, who is currently steadying the team, also signaled to Ugarte to maintain a closer connection with Casemiro.
Given the €50 million (£42.3m) United invested in Ugarte with additional performance incentives, expectations are high, and Amorim's expertise with him will be put to the test.
The intensity and speed of the Premier League present new challenges for Ugarte, who is adjusting to the reduced time on the ball and the heightened physicality.
Amorim's familiarity with Ugarte's strengths could be crucial in turning his performances around. With Van Nistelrooy having stabilized the club's atmosphere post-Ten Hag, Amorim will step into a more manageable environment to work on the individual development of players like Ugarte.
The Uruguayan midfielder, who thrived under Amorim's past guidance, will look forward to this reunion as an opportunity to rediscover his best form.
