According to report on Saturday, November 2, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has asserted that the fainting spells exhibited by six suspects during their recent court appearance were deliberately staged to garner negative attention. This incident occurred when 76 suspects, many of whom were minors and appeared malnourished, were arraigned in connection with the #EndBadGovernance protests. During the proceedings, six individuals collapsed and were swiftly taken out of the courtroom.
Egbetokun emphasized that immediate medical assistance was provided, underscoring the police's commitment to the welfare of those in their custody. Following their arraignment, the court granted bail to each minor at a set amount of N10 million, prompting widespread criticism from both local and international communities.
In a statement dated November 1, which was released on Saturday, Force Spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi stressed that under Nigerian law, individuals who have reached the age of criminal responsibility are liable for their actions, irrespective of their age. Egbetokun reaffirmed that the police approach each case with compassion while upholding legal responsibilities.
He disclosed that the charges against the suspects include serious offenses such as terrorism, arson, and threats to national security. Egbetokun assured the public of the police's dedication to transparency and professionalism, urging citizens to evaluate the situation objectively throughout the legal process.
