Just a few days after a disappointing defeat in London Stadium, Manchester United's new era starts with a Carabao Cup match against Leicester City at Old Trafford on Wednesday night. The Red Devils fired manager Erik ten Hag on Monday after a 2-1 loss to West Ham on Sunday. The defeat came from a controversial penalty given after a VAR review during injury time at London Stadium.
This loss put United in 14th place in the Premier League, closer to the relegation zone than to Champions League spots, making Ten Hag's position as manager no longer sustainable. As it stands, Ruud van Nistelrooy is now in temporary charge and must work to lift the team's spirits.
Leicester City, on the other hand, also struggled, lost 3-1 at home to Nottingham Forest but have had two extra days to prepare, as their game was last Friday.
Nistelrooy will be keen on avoiding the mistakes Ten Hag made that got him sacked, although United are closing in on bringing a new manager in the person of Sporting Lisbon coach Amorin, but Nistelrooy will be the one to prepare the Red Devils for the Carabao Cup.
It's yet to be known which lineup Van Nistelrooy will prefer, but we predict he could fancy the 4-4-2 formation.
Lineup: Andre Onana, Diogo Dalot, DeLigt, Jonny Evans, Martinez, Casemiro, Ugarte, Gernacho, Hojlund, Rashford, Bruno Fernandes.
