Lady Gaga's face looks different - what happened?

Pop sensation Lady Gaga has continuously defied expectations ever since she donned a dress made entirely out of raw beef in 2010.

She's one of the biggest star's of the moment after releasing her highly anticipated new single 'Disease' on Friday.

But it's not just her music that's attracted attention: Cosmetic surgeons have also taken notice of her face.

Or more specifically, how its changed over the years.

The 38-year-old, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, has previously admitted to undergoing cosmetic 'tweakments' including fillers.

Her face has not only captured attention for her music but also for her changing appearance that has caught the eye of cosmetic surgeons.

However, she's always denied having surgery.

Yet, cosmetic experts have now suggested the Poker Face singer may have undergone cosmetic work including a nose job, buccal fat removal and even surgery to reshape the corners of her eyes.

In a YouTube video, Dr Joel Kopelman, a facial plastic surgeon in New York City, also told his 39,000 subscribers she may also have had a controversial non-surgical procedure to tighten the skin which he 'doesn't believe is worth the risks'.

Exploring her transformation over the last two decades, the medic compared a photo of her in 2004, aged 18, where she had 'asymmetry in her left upper eyelid compared to the right' and a 'fullness' to the tip of nose.

By 2010, the Born This Way singer is 'starting to look different' he noted.

She may have had a rhinoplasty, given her nose 'looks more narrow' and 'there is more highlight at the nasal tip'.

A rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a nose job, involves an operation either performed from inside the nostrils - a closed rhinoplasty - or by making a small cut on the nose.

By breaking and repositioning the side nasal bone, a surgeon can also reduce the width of the nose and achieve a narrower appearance.

'In addition, her lips look fuller and she's probably using some fillers to fill in and augment her lips,' Dr Kopelman added.

Comparing photos of her face just one year later in 2011, aged 25, 'she looks markedly different', he also noted.

Her eyelids are now upturned, suggesting she may have had a procedure to elevate the eyes - a lateral canthoplasty.

This could also have been achieved with PDO threads, threads that are placed under the skin to tighten and lift loose or sagging areas.

'This is generally a very temporary procedure that has I believe significant risk associated with it because it's very temporary and I don't believe it's worth the risks,' Dr Kopelman said.

Results of the half-hour-long procedure normally last around two years.

But Save Face, a national register of accredited practitioners in the UK which campaigns for improved safety standards, has long warned of rising complaints about the treatments.

Victims are typically women over 40 who want to appear younger.

By 2012, Dr Kopelman, notes, photos of Lady Gaga suggest 'the PDO threads have worn off or they've been removed'.

Her youthful look, in 2015 aged 29, may be due to lip filler and hollowing of her cheeks, which he attributes to buccal fat removal.

'She's used makeup in the past to create this hollowing but now I think there is a structural change,' he added.

Buccal fat removal, which can give the face a more contoured look, involves removing a small quantity of buccal fat deposits from the cheeks.

'However, with time some people do not look better. They actually look older, so you have to approach those procedures with a lot of caution,' he noted.

In 2018, Lady Gaga has likely had surgery to her eyelids, given the symmetry now between both lids.

Yet, her lips are no longer symmetrically filled suggesting her lip filler injection was 'not balanced out'.

Five years later, in 2023, photos also show a 'deflation of the issue below her eyebrow' due to 'tissue volume shrinking', he said.

This could be a result of filler in the tissue below the eyebrow.

There is also a 'an upwards sweep to her lower eyelids', suggesting the House of Gucci actress 'may have gone back to PDO threads'.

He added: 'By 2024, she looks much more conservative.

'She's starting to emphasise her talents as an actress instead of her imagery and persona as a performer.'

Earlier this year, Dr Gary Linkov, a top US plastic surgeon based in New York, also argued Lady Gaga may have had a rhinoplasty, cheek and lip filler, buccal fat removal and Botox.

In a TikTok seen more than 18,000 times, he suggested she could have also had under eye filler, a 'brow lift as well as a potential facelift procedure'.

But the star has always denied ever having had cosmetic surgery.

In a 2013 interview on the Howard Stern Show, she admitted she was addicted to fillers.

'I've never had any work-work done, but I went through a phase when I was smoking pot when I was really obsessed with getting facial injections,' she said.

In 2011, she also told Harper's Bazaar: 'I have never had plastic surgery, there are many pop singers who have.

'I think that promoting insecurity in the form of plastic surgery is infinitely more harmful than an artistic expression related to body modification.'

However, she added: 'I am an artist, and I have the ability and the free will to choose the way the world will envision me.'
