NLC Reacts to Helicopter Crash

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged a comprehensive investigation into the Eastwind Aviation helicopter crash in the Bonny River, which resulted in the deaths of eight workers, including two crew members, on October 24, 2024.

The helicopter was en route from the Port Harcourt Military base to the FPSO NUIM ANTAN off the coast of Calabar when the tragedy occurred.

In a statement, NLC President Joe Ajaero expressed deep sorrow over the incident, highlighting the sacrifices made by Nigerian workers.

He emphasized the urgent need for enhanced health and safety measures to protect workers, particularly in high-risk sectors like offshore oil and gas.

Ajaero criticized the lax enforcement of safety standards, underscoring that no worker should face life-threatening risks while performing their duties.

The NLC has called for stringent compliance with safety regulations, reliable flight equipment, effective communication, and improved search-and-rescue capabilities.

According to report, Ajaero asserted that the term "accident" should not overshadow the responsibility of relevant agencies to ensure worker safety.
