This alarming incident raises serious concerns about the safety of political gatherings and the increasing intimidation faced by opposition parties in the region.

The Labour Party has condemned the actions, calling for an immediate investigation into the identities of the assailants and the motives behind this aggressive intervention.

The masked men numbering over 20, stormed the venue of the meeting and ordered members to stay quiet.

Five of the masked men walked up to the high table and told the secretary of the Labour party local government election committee, Prince G.O. Ndubueze, that he is under arrest.

The members firmly asserted that the police could not Ndubueze away, as they had failed to present a warrant of arrest during the meeting.

Protesting the action of the police, over 500 members of the party marched to the street with Ndubueze to the Aba Area police command.

Speaking with newsmen, Ndubueze said he would bow to intimidation from Governor Alex Otti who he accused of seeking to impose chairmanship and councillorship candidates in the November 2 local government election.

"I didnt get any warrant of arrest from anywhere. I don't even whether they are policemen, but as law abiding citizen, im going with the police. But i will never bow to intimidation from Gov. Alex Otti. We won't allow him to impose candidates in this local government election.

"This is a governor who came to power through a legitimate election, but wants to impose candidates. The Labour Party in Abia state won't tolerate imposition."
