Flood Submerges Delta Communities, Displaces Residents

The flooding, caused by the persistent rise in water levels over recent days, has led the River Niger and its adjoining creeks to overflow their banks.

Farmlands have been severely affected, with crops such as yams, cassava, and plantains being harvested prematurely as farmers scramble to salvage what they can before their lands are completely overtaken by water.

According to Newsmen, local sources report that many residents have begun relocating to other areas, with some seeking refuge on elevated platforms.

In Ase community, people are moving into local primary schools while awaiting the establishment of Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps.

Mr. Clinton Omokaro, a resident of Ase, confirmed that his community had started submerging, forcing families to abandon their homes.

Similarly, in Umuolu, many homes have already been submerged, and residents are no longer able to sleep in their houses.

Mr. John Alibofi, Chairman of the Umuolu Community Development Committee, expressed deep concern over the situation.

The Chairman of Ndokwa East Local Government Area, Mr. Vincent Osilonya, stated that Abala-Oshimili was the worst affected among the communities.

He confirmed that evacuation efforts are underway, with residents being relocated to higher ground to ensure their safety.

The devastating flood has sparked concern over the wellbeing of the displaced residents, as communities wait for assistance and the creation of IDP camps.
